Use of Anesthetic Creams
- Thoroughly wash the skin area to be treated and dry it well.
- Apply a thick, even layer of cream. The recommended dose is 2–3 g for small areas; for larger areas, use 1–1.5 g per 10 cm².
- Cover with plastic wrap or an occlusive dressing for 1–1½ hours (maximum 2 hours). On genital mucosa, application time can be 5–15 minutes.
- Remove the wrap and clean the skin with a damp wipe.
- Do not use more than one tube per session.
Adverse Effects of Anesthetic Creams
- Numbness, headache
- Eye irritation if it gets into the eyes
- Local skin reactions (redness, itching, warmth, burning)
- Altered taste
- Blurred vision
- Ringing in the ears
- Mild skin allergies (redness, eczema) and, rarely, severe reactions like anaphylaxis.
In some cases, these substances can enter the bloodstream and cause serious effects—arrhythmias, breathing difficulties, neurological symptoms, seizures, even coma or death. Always inform your doctor about all medications you take, as some can increase the risk of methemoglobinemia (reduced blood oxygen transport).

Recommendations & FDA Guidance
Because of increased laser clinics recommending these creams, health authorities like the FDA have issued guidance:
- Consult a doctor before use.
- Apply only the recommended amount.
- Avoid large treatment areas (e.g., full legs).
- Do not use on broken, irritated skin or mucous membranes.
- Avoid heat on treated areas.
- Avoid during pregnancy; they cross the placenta.
- Use caution when breastfeeding; small amounts enter breast milk.
Proper, medically supervised use can make laser hair removal and tattoo sessions far more comfortable. Read the instructions carefully.
